Welcome to Louisiana Tech GIS
The mission of this Tech GIS website is to give students, faculty and the Tech community a portal into the various GIS projects and opportunities available here at Tech. We will be posting online webmaps, professional training offerings, student projects and more for the Tech GIS community. We hope to foster communication and collaboration within the GIS community so feel free to contact us.
New Online Campus Map!
The new online campus map is currently in its infant stage. We will be adding new layers, features and process that enhance the usability of the map. The goal of the campus map is to provide Tech students and faculty spatial information about the La Tech campus. We would like to incorporate a class lookup feature where students can enter in a classroom number and locate their building on the map. Security features like the locations of emergency phones may be a useful addition to the map. If you have any suggestions or requests for the campus map please e-mail Wesley Palmer at wpalmer@latech.edu . Check back soon for updates and other additions to the Tech GIS online site.
ArcGIS Server 10 Deployed
ArcGIS Server is an internet mapping software package created by ESRI. This program allows us to create online versions of desktop GIS maps. With ArcGIS Server we can also publish data and other GIS resources over the web for other GIS users to incorporate into their workflow. We will be adding ArcGIS Server webmapping applications under our “Online Maps” section of this website. When using a webmap be sure to notice the toolbar in the upper right hand corner of the map. The toolbar allows the user to pan, zoom, measure, identify by clicking, and display an overview map of the area.
GIS Club Travels to State GIS Conference
Seven members of the GIS club along with their faculty advisor traveled to The 25th Annual Louisiana Remote Sensing & GIS Workshop at LSU's campus in Baton Rouge. This was a great opportunity for GIS students to gain networking experience within the Louisiana GIS community. Students attended three days of presentations by GIS professionals in various research areas. The GIS club's faculty advisor, Mr. Wesley Palmer, also gave a presentation on Tech's campus map. The students also enjoyed the traditional crawfish boil at the end of the conference. It was a great experience for the GIS club and we will be going back next year.
GIS Club Formed
The GIS Club at Louisiana Tech raises awareness throughout the Louisiana Tech community by providing GIS students, other interested students, and surrounding intrested groups with information about geographic information systems and its applications. Club activities include software workshops, participation in GIS conferences, guest speakers, participating in GIS service learning projects in the north Louisiana area and other assorted activities relating to GIS. The GIS club meets monthly and is open to all interested Louisiana Tech students.
